Studio Baboo® ~ Classes

We have a continually changing schedule of classes offering everything from basic bead stringing to off loom stitches to wire work. We also host several special workshop events throughout the year - Jeannette Cook, Maggie Meister, Fabulous Flowers and more! If you have any questions about the skill level required for any of the classes, please call us.

If the class you wish to take is full, please ask to be put on the waiting list. Or, if you are interested in taking a class that does not fit your schedule, please let us know so we can determine if there is sufficient interest to schedule the class again.

Class Registration Information

Register for workshops in person at the store or by telephone with a credit card. To Register by Phone Call: 434-244–2905. Registration will be accepted on a first come basis. Payment in full is required at the time of registration. Advance registration is strongly recommended - your space in the workshop is not secure until we receive payment. Materials and tools are not included in the class fee unless noted. Class fees are not refundable unless Studio Baboo cancels the class.

A supply list will be mailed to you upon receipt of your registration. Please read it carefully as you may be required to do some advance preparation before coming to class. ALL REQUIRED MATERIALS AND TOOLS ARE AVAILABLE IN THE STORE AND OUR STAFF WILL GLADLY HELP YOU WITH YOUR SELECTIONS. Please purchase your materials ahead of time or arrive early to shop for your materials as no class time is allotted for purchasing materials. The store is open to students one-half hour before early morning classes begin. Samples of the class projects are on display in the store and we encourage you to stop by and see them.

Classes will begin promptly – please be courteous and arrive on time. Unless otherwise specified, classes are suitable for adults and children over the age of 14. No babies, children or unregistered guests are permitted in the workshop.

A NOTE ABOUT CELL PHONES: Please turn off your cell phone while in the classroom. It is disruptive and discourteous to the instructor and students when your phone rings during class. If it is imperative that you stay in touch with family or office while in class, please put your phone on silent mode and let your voice mail take a message. If you must return a call, LEAVE THE CLASSROOM and step outside to return the call. If you miss important instructions while you are absent from the classroom, the instructor cannot be expected to "catch you up" when you return to class.

Materials are not included in the class fee unless otherwise noted. Advance registration and payment are required to hold your place in class. Upon registration a materials list will be sent to you. Winter Weather

The winter class schedule is always the most challenging to put together – the chance of bad weather makes it difficult to schedule out-of-town instructors, and sometimes makes it impossible for students to make it to class. So, if Charlottesville City and/or Albemarle County schools are closed due to weather conditions, classes are cancelled. If in doubt, call before coming to class. We will try to have the store open for shopping regardless of the weather conditions and suggest you call before visiting on bad weather days.

Classes are coded blue for beginner, green for intermediate and red for advanced

	DEW DROP BRACELET Saturday, May 5th Instructor: Meghan Bryant Level: All Time: 10:00-12:00 Fee: $25.00 Learn a simple right angle weave technique while making a charming bracelet of fire polish crystals and teardrops. This little bracelet is a great accent for all your outfits. Bet you can’t make just one!
	DaVINE NECKLACE Saturday, May 5th Instructor: Meghan Bryant Level: All Time: 1:30-3:30 Fee: $25.00 Create a lightweight, delicate necklace while learning to finger crochet. Small drop beads add color and texture to your necklace and create the illusion of tiny flower buds or leaves draping elegantly around your neck.
	POLYMER CLAY - FAN EARRINGS Wednesday, May 9th Instructor: Rhonda Raban Level: Intermediate Time: 11:00-3:00 Fee: $30.00 Create two styles of fan-shaped earrings while learning to combine polymer clay with texture sheets, metallic paint pens and acrylic paint. Students must be able to make a simple wire loop (as for making earrings) and should know how to condition clay and use a clay cutting blade. Wear your play clothes – acrylic paint and WILL NOT wash out!
	RUSSIAN SPIRAL Saturday, May 12th Instructor: Perrie May Level: All Time: 11:00-3:00 Fee: $30.00 Erase your bead weaving fears and try Russian Spiral – a very simple netting stitch that creates an interesting, textured rope that drapes beautifully when made as a necklace. It works up quickly and is a good project for beginners as well as a great new pattern for more experienced beaders.
	CHUNKY NECKLACE Wednesday, May 16th Instructor: Terri Gable Level: All Time: 11:00-1:00 Fee: $30.00 (Included Materials) With just two of our “Necklace Starter” strands and one matching or complimentary strand of beads you can make a 20” designer-style necklace. Let your creativity loose and design an attention-getting necklace while learning the basics of bead stringing! This is a great class for beginners to learn a basic bead stringing technique and a fun class for intermediate beaders looking for a creative way to spend a few hours.
	SPARKLY WHEEL Thursday, May 17th Instructor: Terri Gable Level: All Time: 5:30-7:30 Fee: $30.00 This intricate-looking little circle of crystals and seed beads is easy to make and so versatile. Suspend one from a ribbon or delicate beaded necklace, use one as a centerpiece for a bracelet, connect several for a dramatic necklace or make a swingy pair of earrings! Nikia Angel designed these addicting little sparkly wheels. Level: All. Students should be comfortable using needle and thread or have basic sewing skills.
	KUMIHIMO - 16 STRAND BRAID Saturday, May 19th Instructor: Kerrie Peirce Level: All Time: 11:00-4:00 Fee: $40.00 Advanced students will expand their Kumihimo skills while tackling the challenge of making a 16-strand braid with size 15° seed beads. Students will complete a bracelet-length braid in class. This pattern requires concentration but the results are worth the effort – so get a good night’s sleep and leave your cell phone at home! Level: Intermediate to Advanced. Prerequisite: Students must have completed at least ten 8-strand braids on their own and must be able to prepare their bead strands and setup the Maru Dai without assistance.
	TREASURE TRINKET COLLAGE Wednesday, May 23th Instructor: Rhonda Raban Level: All Time: 11:00-1:00 Fee: $35.00 (Includes Materials) Learn to transform a collection of unique trinkets into an attention-getting brooch or pendant. Rhonda will show you how easy it is to create a small work of art using bits and pieces. Every materials kit will be unique and each student will learn how to use what is on hand. This is a great way to use your old stash of odds and ends. Release your inner artist!
	BEAD STRINGING BASICS Thursday, May 24th Instructor: Studio Baboo Staff Level: Beginner Time: 11:00-12:30 Fee: $25.00 (Includes Materials) Learn the basics of creating necklaces and bracelets using the most popular stringing technique. The instructor will discuss how to choose the correct type of stringing material as well as the use of a variety of different findings. Students will complete a necklace in class. Level: Beginner. (The Chunky Necklace class on May 16 is a great alternative to Bead Stringing Basics.)
	EARRING BASICS Thursday, May 24th Instructor: Studio Baboo Staff Level: Beginner to Intermediate Time: 5:30-7:30 Fee: $25.00 (Includes Materials) Expand your jewelry wardrobe with earrings. Students will learn how to make consistently sized wire loops and combine bead components. Students will make three pairs of earrings in class.
	TROPICAL VACATION NECKLACE Saturday, May 26th Instructor: Terri Gable Level: All Time: 11:00-3:00 Fee: $30.00 Choose bright primary colors for a truly tropical flair or softly colored gemstones for an earthy look. Either way, this will be your go-to, go-with-everything vacation necklace. It’s so easy, you can make one while you are traveling!
	COLORING FILIGREE AND METAL COMPONENTS Saturday, May 26th Instructor: Terri Gable Level: All Time: 11:00-1:00 Fee: $35.00 (Includes Materials) In this class, students will learn how to add color accents to filigree and metal components with a raised or etched designs. These easy techniques will push your creativity to a new level as you learn how to add an antique patina to a filigree pendant and luminous color to an embossed metal disk. No matter what your style, your designs will take on a whole new dimension with these artful elements. No finished project is planned for this short introductory session but we’ll give you ideas for creating beautiful jewelry with your newly colored pendants! Wear your play clothes – you will work with paint and ink in this class!

	FIBULA - AN ANCIENT BROOCH Saturday, June 9th Instructor: Barbara Tilley Level: All Time: 11:00-1:00 Fee: $30.00 (Includes Some Materials) The fibula, an ancient brooch, is the precursor of the modern safety pin. Fibulae were only decorative but a practical way to fasten clothing. Learn to make fancifully practical fibulae to hold a skirt or shawl closed or to wear decoratively on a hat or lapel. Students will learn to make decorative wire coils, fashion a clasp, hammer wire and have lots of fun with wire!
	BEAD & WIRE CROCHET Wednesday, June 13th Instructor: Rose Gutterbock Level: All Time: 10:00-2:00 Fee: $30.00 Simplicity and elegance are embodied in this easy to make crocheted wire and bead necklace. No prior crochet or beading experience required! Use a bead mix and multiple colors of wire to jazz it up or tone it down with one color of wire and coordinating beads.

	GARDEN LARIAT NECKLACE Saturday, June 15th Instructor: Terri Gable Level: All Time: 11:30-1:00 Fee: $35.00 (Includes Materials) A lariat is an open-ended necklace that ties closed in the front. This timeless style is lightweight and easy to wear. In this class you will make a lariat necklace of chain embellished with translucent lucite flowers and leaves. You will learn how to attach components to chain with jump rings and how to make wrapped wire loops. We'll take the mystery out of how to suspend dangles from the inside of a cone shaped bead. Choose silver plated chain or gold plated chain. We will have a variety of bead kits to choose from
	POLYMER CLAY 101 Saturday, June 15th Instructor: Rhonda Raban Level: All Time: 11:00-3:00 Fee: $30.00 Polymer clay is a versatile modeling compound that easily cures in an oven. Learn how to condition the clay, mold, and shape it while making several accent pieces to use as pendants or brooches! You’ll be amazed at the fabulous pieces you can create in just one class! Wear your play clothes – you will be working with clay and paint.
	LEATHER WRAP BRACELET Thursday, June 21th Instructor: Terri Gable Level: All Time: 11:00-1:00 or 5:30-7:30 Fee: $25.00 You’ve seen these bracelets everywhere - at prices up to $200 and more! This chic, casual style wraps several times around your wrist for a layered look. You will learn to make a 3-wrap bracelet in class and fasten it with a decorative button.
	MINIATURE SCULPTURED FLORAL PENDANTS - Fantasy Flower and Wisteria Lane Saturday, June 23rd Instructor: Barbara Gibson Level: Intermediate Time: 11:00-3:00 Fee: $35.00 Use two Fantasy Flowers to make a charming pair of earrings or create a stack two or more for a long, elegant pendant. Bling them with crystals or not to suit your individual style. The organic shape of the Wisteria Lane pendant Students will learn to combine peyote and herringbone stitch, how to increase in the middle of a peyote row and how to assemble a simple 3-dimensional form. Students must know peyote stitch.
	MEGHAN'S WIRE GARDEN NECKLACE Saturday, June 30th Instructor: Meghan Bryant Level: All Time: 11:00-3:00 Fee: $30.00 Learn to create a two part wire frame and fill it with a luscious filigree garden of beads and wire. Once you learn the basic technique, you can create pendant in a variety of shapes.

	BEADS AND LUNCH EVERY TUESDAY Level: No skill level. Time: 11:00-2:00 Fee: NONE! Our classroom space is available every Tuesday for an “open studio” session. Bring a project, your own lunch or snacks and enjoy the company of other beaders. This is not a class but an opportunity to relax and have fun while you work on your bead projects away from the distractions of home and family. No need to sign up – no fee – come and go as your schedule permits Can't seem to focus on your projects at home? You are welcome to work at our “Make It – Take It” table. Weekdays and Thursday evenings are the best times to stop in if you need help and inspiration from our staff. But if Saturday is the only day that suits your schedule, well, that's fine, too.
